(Greek: a suffix; in medicine, a painful seizure)

A suffix in medicine that refers to a seizure of sudden-acute pain, as with gout.


anconagra
1. Pain in the elbow, or elbows.
2. Acute gout of the elbow.
arteriagra
Pain emanating from an artery; such as, a headache from an inflamed temporal artery.
arthragra
Articular gout (painful swelling that occurs in various joints of the body).
cardiagra
celiagra
A sudden painful affection (disease, malady) of the stomach or other abdominal organs.
cephalagra
Pain in the head, a headache.
cheiragra, chiragra
1. Pain in the hand.
2. Gout in the hand.
chiragra
Pain in the joints of the hand.
cleidagra, clidagra
A sudden severe pain in the clavicle (shoulder bone), resembling gout.
coxagra
Pain in the hip.
dactylagra
Pain from gout of the fingers.
glossagra, glossalgia
Painful sensations in the tongue, including a sensation of burning.
gonagra
Pain from gout in the knee.
gonatagra
A term for gout in the knee.
gout
1. From Latin gutta "a drop", because of the ancient belief that the disease was due to a “noxa” falling drop by drop into the joint.
2. A group of disorders of purine metabolism, manifested by various combinations of (a) hyperuricemia; (b) recurrent acute inflammatory arthritis induced by crystals of monosodium urate monohydrate; (c) tophaceous deposits of these crystals in and around the joints of the extremities, which may lead to crippling destruction of joints; and (d) uric acid urolithiasis.
3. In rheumatology, a recurrent acute arthritis of peripheral joints caused by the accumulation of monosodium urate crytals. Often presents as pain and swelling confined to one joint. The big toe joint is commonly affected.
4. The arthritis occurs secondary to an inherited abnormality of purine metabolism, resulting in the deposition of uric acid crystals (sodium urate) within the joint space and articular cartilage.
