(Anglo Saxon or Teutonic: in Old English times, eye was eage, which is related to a whole range of words for "eye" in other European languages; including, Greek ophthalmos and Latin oculus [with all of its subsequent derivatives])


eyelid
1. One of two movable protective folds that cover the anterior surface of the eyeball when it is closed.
2. One of two movable folds that cover the front of the eyeball when closed; formed with a fibrous core (tarsal plate) and the palpebral portions of the orbicularis oculi muscle covered with skin on the superficial, anterior surface and lined with conjunctiva on the deep, posterior surface.

Rapid contraction of the contained muscle fibers produces blinking; each has fixed (orbital) and free margins, the latter separated centrally by the puopebral fissure, united at the lateral and medial palpebral commissures, and bearing eyelashes, openings of tarsal and ciliary glands and (medially) the lacrinal puncta.

eye muscle imbalance
A pathological condition of the extraocular muscles of one or both eyes.

It causes the eyes to be misaligned in one or more axes or direction.

eyepiece
The compound lens at the end of the microscope tube closest to the eye.

It magnifies the image made by the objective lens.

eye protection
Use of goggles, plastic or glass face masks, or protective glasses to prevent injury to the eye during work or play in situations that could cause severe damage to the eye; such as, when working with a grinding machine, sports involving a small ball, fishing, or hiking in an area where tree branches must be dodged.
eye stones
Very small stones placed in the conjunctival sac to remove a mobile foreign body from the eye.
eyestrain
1. Tiredness of the eyes because of over use or the use of improper corrective lenses.
2. Pain and fatigue of the eyes, often accompanied by a headache, resulting from prolonged use of the eyes, uncorrected defects of vision, or an imbalance of the eye muscles.
eyewash
Any suitable liquid material used to wash the eye; such as, sterile physiological saline or sterile water.
