galvano-, galvan-

(Etymology: Italian physicist Luigi Galvani, who discovered and first described it; electric currents, electrical, primarily direct current)

galvanometer
An instrument that measures a small electric current by measuring the mechanical motion derived from electromagnetic or electrodynamic forces produced by the current.

Galvanometers can be used directly as ammeters, and are the core element of many ohmmeters and voltmeters.

galvanometry
The art or process of measuring the force of electric currents.
galvanoprostatectomy, galvanoprostatotomy
Partial excision of a hypertrophic prostate by use of galvanocautery (cautery effected by a knife or needle heated by the passage of a galvanic electrical current).

Hypertrophy is the enlargement or overgrowth of an organ or part of the body due to increased size of the constituent cells, as in hypertrophic prostate.

galvanopuncture
A form of acupuncture using low frequency electrically stimulated needles to produce analgesia and anaesthesia and to treat disease; electroacupuncture.
galvanosurgery
The surgical use of an electric current to cut or cauterize tissue.
galvanotaxis, galvanotactic
1. Movement of certain organisms in relation to the direction of an electric field or current.
2. A directed reaction of a motile organism to an electric current.
galvanotherapy
The treatment of disease with the application of direct (galvanic) current.
galvanotonic
Denoting a direct electric current capable of exciting muscle.
galvanotonus
Muscular contraction induced by direct current.
galvanotropism, galvanotropic
1. An orientation response to an electric current.
2. The growth or orientation of a plant in response to an electric current.
prosgalvanotaxis
Positive galvanotaxis.
psychogalvanic
Referring to changes in the electrical resistance of the skin that result from either sensory or ideational stimulation (ideation is the process of forming ideas or mental images and examining their relationships).
psychogalvanometer
1. A device for determining changes in the electrical resistance of the skin in response to emotional stimuli.
2. Any electrical circuit designed to measure the psychogalvanic response.

The reading of the degree of change in skin resistance, that is, changes in sweat gland secretion, detected by a sensitive galvanometer may be made directly and visually, or a permanent registration of the psychogalvanic response can be made by means of an ink trace or photographic recording.

topogalvanotaxis
The directed movement or orientation of a motile organism towards the source of an electric stimulus.
