Confusing Words: accept, except, expect

(Clarifications of these English Words)


accept (ahk SEPT)
1. To receive with consent, agree to, consent to, acknowledge: "I accept your apology. The police accepted his story to be truthful."
2. To take what is offered, receive willingly: "She accepted his invitation to dance."
3. Admit, assume, bear, acknowledge: "The boy accepted full responsibility for breaking the window."
except (ik SEPT)
1. To leave out, excluding: "Put everything in the box except the vase."
2. Exempt, exclude, omit: "The “A” students were excepted from taking the exam."
expect (ik SPEKT)
1. To look forward to, plan on, look for, anticipate: "The skiers expected deep snow in this winter."
2. Demand, look for, require, count on: "The company expects promptness of every employee."
3. Assume, presume, calculate, contemplate: "I expect to see her here soon."
