Referring to the hallux or the big toe.
hallux (s), halluces (pl)
The big toe; the first digit of the foot.
hallux dolorosus
1. A painful condition of the big toe that is seen in flatfoot deformity.
2. Pain in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the great toe resulting from flatfoot.
hallux flexus
1. A hammer toe deformity characterized by acute flexion of the interphalangeal joint.
2. Another term for hallux malleus.
hallux malleus
Hammertoe of the great toe.
hallux rigidus
1. A restriction or loss of motion of the joint connecting the great toe to the metatarsal. Pain that occurs when walking.
2. A painful limitation of motion in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the big toe in flexion. Also called stiff toe.
hallux valgus
1. Displacement of the big toe toward the other toes.
2. A displacement of the big toe away from the midline at the metatarsophalangeal joint.

When the joint is covered with an adventitious bursa, it is called a bunion.

hallux varus
1. Dispacement of the great toe away from the other toes.
2. A displacement of the big toe towards the midline and away from the other toes.
