gnotobiotics
1. The science of raising laboratory animals whose microfauna and microflora are specifically known in their entirety.
2. The study of organisms or environmental conditions that have been rendered free of bacteria or contaminants or into which a known microorganism or contaminant has been introduced for research purposes.
halobion
An association of marine plants.
halobiont, halobiontic
A marine organism or an organism living in a saline habitat.
halobios
1. The total life of the sea.
2. That part of the Earth’s surface occupied by marine organisms; also, halibios.
halobiotic
A reference to life in the sea.
helobious
Living in marshes.
hemiendobiosis
The condition of a parasite that can exist both inside and outside the host.
heterobiography, heterobiographical
A biography written by another person as opposed to an autobiography.
heterosymbiont
A reference to a symbiotic association of several members, particularly of a lichen containing several species of algae.
hobiont
Holophyte or any green, phototrophic, independent plant.
holendobiosis
A condition of being an obligate (obligatory) endobiont and specifically that of a parasitic fungus that produces spores within the host tissue.
hydrobiology
1. The study of life, or living organisms, in aquatic habitats.
2. The study of live forms in bodies of water; such as, lakes or estuaries.
hydrobios
The sum total of all aquatic life; that part of the earth’s surface occupied by aquatic organisms.
hydrobiosis
The development of living organisms, as bacteria, in fluid media; the conditions of life of such organisms; fluid media.
hypobiosis
A condition of those benthic organisms that live under surface structures such as domes and other similar situations.
