amphibiolite
The remains of an amphibious animal found in the fossil state.
amphibiological
That part of zoology that deals with amphibious animals.
Amphibion (s), Amphibia (pl)
A class of quadruped vertebrates containing frogs, newts, salamanders, toads, cecilians (caecilians) and many fossil groups.
amphibiosis
The condition of an organism that spends part of its life on land and part in water.
amphibiously
In an amphibious manner; like an amphibious being.
amphibiousness
The quality of being amphibious; life in, or connection with, two elements.
anabiont
Perennial (constantly recurring or lasting for an indefinite time).
anabiosis
1. Restoration of vital processes after their apparent cessation.
2. A revival or resuscitation of life; returning to life.
3. The condition of an organism that has passed into a resting stage, that is cyclic or seasonal, but produced by a change in the environment; such as, the loss of moisture.
anabiotic
1. Apparently lifeless, but still capable of living.
2. Acting as a stimulant or tonic.
3. A revivifying remedy, a powerful stimulant; resuscitating or restorative.
anaerobe
1. A microorganism that lives and grows in the complete, or almost complete, absence of molecular oxygen.
2. Any organism that can live in the absence of oxygen, obligate anaerobes being unable even to live in low oxygen concentrations.
anaerobiont
An organism capable of anaerobic existence.
anaerobiosis
1. Growing or occurring in the absence of molecular oxygen.
2. A reference to an environment in which the partial pressure of oxygen is significantly below normal atmospheric levels; deoxygenated. 3. Life sustained by an organism in the absence of oxygen or existing in an oxygen-free atmosphere.
anaerobiotic
1. Related to life in a medium devoid or empty of free oxygen.
2. Characterized by existence in an oxygen-free atmosphere.
3. A reference to habitats devoid of, or significantly depleted in, molecular oxygen.
anhydrobiosis
1. Dormancy induced by low humidity or by drying out.
2. A state caused by dehydration, in which an organism's metabolism is reduced to an imperceptible level.
anoxybiont
An organism incapable of using oxygen as distinct from one that is aerobic.
