homo-, hom- +

(Greek: same, equal, like, similar, common; one and the same)

This Greek prefix forms many scientific and other terms, often in opposition to hetero-. Don’t confuse this Greek homo- element with the Latin homo- which means “mankind”.


homodox
Of the same opinion.
homodoxian
A person of the same opinion or belief.
homodromous
1. Moving, running, or acting in the same direction.
2. Moving in the same direction; such as, a lever or pulley in which the resistance and the actuating force are both on the same side of the fulcrum or axis.
3. Running in the same direction; for example, stems twining around a support, or of the spiral succession of leaves on stems and their branches.
homodynamic
A reference to an insect, its life cycle, etc. which is characterized by a continuous succession of generations throughout the year, so long as reasonably favorable conditions prevail.
homoeandrous
Having only one kind of stamen.
homoecious
1. A reference to a parasite occupying the same host throughout its life cycle.
2. Host-specific.
homoeomorphism
A near similarity of crystalline forms between unlike chemical compounds.
homoeosis
The modification of one segmental appendage or structure to resemble a different appendage or structure of the same homologous series.
homoeotherm, homoeothermic, homoeothermal, homoeothermy
Any of the animals, including mammals and birds, that tend to maintain a constant body temperature.
homo-erotic
1. Pertaining to or characterized by a tendency for erotic emotions to be centred on a person of the same sex.
2. Of or pertaining to a homo-erotic person.
3. Frequently a synonym of homosexual.
homogamete, homogametic
Having only one kind of gamete.
homogamy, homogamous
1. Fertilization of a flower by its own pollen or by that of another flower on the same plant.
2. The simultaneous maturation of male and female reproductive organs in a flower or hermaphrodite organism.
3. Applied to flowers in which the stamens and pistils ripen together.
4. The condition of a plant producing only one kind of flower.
5. Similarity of husband and wife in a specific trait.
homogen
A group that has a common origin.
homogenate
A substance produced by homogenizing.
homogene, homogeneal
Of the same race.
