(Greek: air, mist, wind)
aerobatics
Spectacular feats done with an airplane; such as loops, rolls, etc; stunt flying.
aerobe
1. An organism that can live and grow only in the presence of oxygen; especially a bacterium.
2. An organism that can use oxygen as a final electron acceptor in a respiratory chain.
3. A micro-organism that requires free oxygen for its existence.
An antonym of anaerobe.
aerobes, faculative
Organisms which can grow either with or without air.
aerobic
1. Living in air; or occurring in the presence of oxygen or requiring oxygen to live.
In aerobic respiration, which is the process used by the cells of most organisms, the production of energy from glucose metabolism requires the presence of oxygen.
2. Relating to an aerobe; also
aerophilic,
aerophilous.
3. Growing or occurring only in the presence of molecular oxygen.
4. Speeding up respiration by increasing respiration and heart rates usually with exercises; such as, utilizing the principles of aerobics; including, aerobic exercises or aerobic dances.
aerobics
1. An active exercise program done; for example, with music, often in a class.
2. A system of physical conditioning to enhance circulatory and respiratory efficiency that involves vigorous, sustained exercise; such as, jogging, swimming, or cycling; thereby improving the body's use of oxygen.
aerobiological
1. A reference to the study of airborne micro-organisms or spores and their distribution; especially, as agents of infection.
2. Relating to that branch of biology which deals with the distribution of living organisms by air, either the exterior, or outdoor air (extramural aerobiology), or the indoor air (intramural aerobiology).
aerobiologist
Someone who studies or specializes in the study of airborne microorganisms or spores.
aerobiology
1. The study of atmospheric constituents, living and nonliving, of biological significance; for example, airborne spores, pathogenic bacteria, allergenic substances, and pollutants.
2. That branch of biology which deals with the distribution of living organisms by the air, either the exterior or outdoor air (extramural aerobiology) or the indoor air (intramural aerobiology).
aerobiont
Either an organism living in air as distinct from water or soil or an organism requiring oxygen.
aerobioscope
An apparatus for collecting and determining the bacterial content of the air.
aerobiosis
1. Growing or occurring only in the presence of molecular oxygen.
2. Living, or existing, only in the presence of air or free oxygen.
3. An environment in which the partial pressure of oxygen is similar to normal atmospheric levels.
4. Life which is sustainable by means of atmospheric oxygen.
aerobiotic
A reference to or characterized by aerobiosis; aerobic.
aerobullosis
Decompression sickness or the reduction of atmospheric pressure for people who have ascended to great heights or for those who have descended to great depths.
aerocele
1. A tumor formed by air filling an adventitious pouch, such as laryngocele and trachecele.
2. Distention of a small natural cavity with gas.
aerochorous, aerochore, aerochory
