(Greek: pain)

Don't confuse these Greek algo-, alg- words with other words that come from the Latin element, alg-, which means "sea weed".


algometer, algesimeter
An instrument that purports to measure sensitiveness to pain in terms of amount of pressure exerted on the skin by a blunt instrument.
Weeds are a pain in the grass.

algometry
The process of measuring pain.
algometry, algometric
The measurement of sensitivity to painful stimuli, as with an algometer.
algophilia
Pleasure experienced in the thought of pain in others or in oneself; also: algolagnia.
algophily
In psychiatry, synonymous with masochism [sexual satisfaction that is dependent upon the subject suffering pain, ill-treatment, and humiliation]; a term coined by Féré in L’Instinct Sexuel.
algophily, algophilia
1. A fondness for pain; synonymous with masochism (deriving sexual pleasure from being treated cruelly).
2. Deriving pleasure when suffering pain.
algophobia
1. An excessive fear of pain. Mankind has suffered and feared pain since the beginning of time. Although a wide variety of drugs are now available to ease pain, it is still a fearful topic, and the prospect of having pain makes many people overly anxious.
2. A morbid, exaggerated, irrational, or excessive fear of pain.
algos
A painful spasm or crisis caused by disease.
algospasm
1. Spasm produced by pain.
2. Painful spasm or cramp.
