avarice
1. An insatiable greed for riches; inordinate, miserly desire to gain and hoard wealth.
2. An excessive desire for gain; greediness after wealth; covetousness; cupidity.
avaricious
1. Characterized by avarice; greedy; covetous.
2. An extremely strong desire to obtain or keep material wealth.
3. Actuated by avarice; greedy of gain; immoderately desirous of accumulating property.
avariciously
1. Covetously; with an inordinate desire of gaining wealth.
2. In a greedy manner.
avariciousness
1. Extreme greed for material wealth.
2. Cupidity (excessive desire, especially for wealth; greed; avarice).
avarist
Someone who has an excessive desire for material gain and greediness after gain.
Avarus non implebitur pecunia; et qui amat divitias, fructum non capiet ex eis.
He that loveth silver will not be satisfied with silver, nor he that loveth abundance with increase.

From the Old Testament: Ecclesiastes, V, 10 (c. 250 B.C.). It is probably the origin of "The More he has, the more he wants."

It is said that the multi-millionaire, John D. Rockefeller, was once asked, "How much money does it take to make a man happy?" His response: "Just a little more!"

Semper avarus eget.
A greedy man is always in need.
