(Latin: ear)

Don't confuse this word family with another auri- unit which means "gold".


auriscalp, auriscalpium
1. A scraping instrument used to remove foreign matter from the ear.
2. An earpick.
auriscope
An instrument for inspecting, or examining, the ears; also known as, an otoscope.

The source of illumination of an auriscope may be incorporated into the instrument; such as, in the "electric auriscope"; or it may be an independent light which is reflected into the ear by means of a forehead mirror.

auriscopy
Examination of the ears with an auriscope.
aurist
A medical specialist in the diagnosis, medical treatment, and surgery of the ear; and its anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
aurometer
An instrument for measuring the hearing level of the ears.
auroscope
A medical instrument consisting of a magnifying lens and light; used for examining the external ear (the auditory meatus and especially the tympanic membrane).
binaural, binaurally
1. Having two ears.
2. Involving the use of both ears.
3. Designating sound reproduction or transmission in which at least two sources of sounds are used to give a stereophonic effect.

dextraural
1. Right-eared; characterizing an individual who prefers to listen with the right ear, as with a telephone receiver, or someone who depends more on the right ear in binaural hearing.

2. Descriptive of an individual who prefers to listen with the right ear, as when using a telephone receiver, or a person who depends more on the right ear in binaural hearing.
