abbreviation
1. The result of abbreviating; an abbreviated or reduced form; short summary, abridgement.
2. A shortened form of a spoken word, or written symbol; a part of a word or symbol standing for the whole.
abdication
1. The action of formally renouncing, disowning, or casting off. Now only applied to the disowning of a son in Roman Law.
2. Resignation, surrender, renunciation (generally).
3. Resignation or abandonment, either formal or virtual, of sovereignty or other high trust.
4. Formal renunciation or relinquishment of the ownership of goods by an insurer to the underwriters; abandonment.
aberration, aberrations
1. A wandering or straying away; a departure or deviation from what is considered normal or from the socially recognized path.
2. A defect in a lens or mirror, causing a distorted image or one with colored edges.
3. In astronomy, a small periodic change in the apparent position of a star or other astronomical object, caused by the motion of the earth around the sun.
4. A disorder or abnormal alteration in one's mental state.
ablactation
The weaning of a child from nursing or the cessation of milk secretion.
acclamation
1. Loud or eager expression of assent or approval, as to vote a motion by acclamation. Also, to elect a candidate by (also with) acclamation: unanimously (or overwhelmingly) and without a ballot.
2. An act of acclaiming; an exclamation, or phrase addressed to anyone in a loud voice.
3. Loud applause or approbation however expressed.
adoration
1. A feeling of profound love and admiration.
2. Worship given to God alone.
3. The act of strongly admiring.
adulteration
1. The act of adulterating (especially the illicit substitution of one substance for another).
2. Being mixed with extraneous material; the product of adultering.
3. The act of adulterating; especially, the illicit substitution of one substance for another.
advocation
1. The action taken by a person who pleads for or in behalf of someone else; the process of being an intercessor.
2. The process of pleading for a cause or propounding an idea.
3. A reference to the transaction whereby someone pleads the cause of another person in a court of law.
aeration
1. The process of exposing to air.
2. The charging of a liquid with air or other gas, as the oxygenation of blood in the bronchial alveoli.
3. The act of charging a liquid with a gas making it effervescent.
affiliation
ambulation
To move from place to place by walking.
arborification
1. Transformation into a tree or a tree-like structure.
2. The process by which a tree is the "reincarnation" of a human.
auspication
The taking of auspices, the process of getting favourable omens.
bibation
The act of bibbing.
brachiation
