vapori-, vapor-, vapo- +

(Latin: steam)

anesthetic vaporizer
A device for the evaporation of a liquid anesthetic, preferably at constant temperature, into a carrier gas, usually oxygen, oxygen plus nitrous oxide, or air.
atmidometric; evaporimeter
1. A reference to an instrument for measuring the rate at which water evaporates, usually into the atmosphere.
2. Relating to an instrument for determining the amount of evaporation from a moist surface in a given time.
devaporation
The change of vapor into water, as in the formation of rain.
evaporable, evaporability
That which can evaporate or undergo evaporation; such as, evaporable liquids or fluids.
evaporate
1. To lose, or cause to lose, liquid by vaporization leaving a more concentrated residue.
2. To change a liquid into a vapor, usually by heating to below its boiling point, or change from a liquid to vapor in this way.
3. To remove liquid from something, usually by heating, to produce a more concentrated or solid substance.
4. To disappear gradually, or to fade away to nothing.
5. To deposit something; such as, a metal film on a surface through the condensation of a vaporized substance.
evaporated milk
1. Milk that has been thickened, or concentrated, by removing some of the water by evaporation.
2. Concentrated, unsweetened milk made by evaporating some of the water from whole milk.
evaporation
1. A process in which something is changed from a liquid to a vapor without its temperature reaching boiling point.
2. The conversion of a liquid into a vapor, usually the slow process that occurs below the boiling point of the liquid.
evaporation pond
A containment pond designed to hold liquid wastes and to concentrate the waste through a process of evaporation.
evaporation rate
The rate at which a particular substance will vaporize (evaporate) when compared to the rate of a known substance; such as, ethyl ether.

This term is especially useful for health and fire-hazard considerations.

evaporative
Any process in which a liquid is converted into its vapor phase by the addition of heat to the liquid.
evaporative cooler
An air-cooling unit that turns ambient air into moist, cooler air by saturating it with water vapor.
evaporator
1. The component or element of a refrigeration system where the refrigerant withdraws heat energy as it evaporates; that is, it changes from a liquid to a gas.
2. Any device in which evaporation occurs; especially, one designed to concentrate a solution.
evaporimeter, atmometer
1. An instrument that measures the rate of evaporation of water.
evapotranspiration
1. The total loss of water from a particular area, equal to the sum of the amount of water lost by evaporation from the soil, and other surfaces, and the amount lost by transpiration from plants.
2. The combined removal of water from surfaces by evaporation and from plants by transpiration.
pervaporate
To cause (a liquid) to evaporate through a semi-permeable membrane in order, for example, to separate liquids.
