super-, supra-, sur- +

(Latin: above, over, more than; excessive)

Sur- is a form of super- formed through the French and shouldn't be confused with another assimilated sur- form that comes from sub- and means: "under, below, beneath".

In some words, super- is amplified to mean: "on top of; higher in rank or position than; superior to; greater in quality, amount, or degree than others of its kind; to a degree greater than others of its kind; to a degree greater than normal; extra, additional".


superheat
1. To heat excessively; overheat.
2. To heat (steam or other vapor not in contact with its own liquid) beyond its saturation point at a given pressure.
3. To heat (a liquid) above its boiling point without causing vaporization.
superhuman
1. Above or beyond what is human; having a higher nature or greater powers than humans have: "He was a superhuman being."
2. Exceeding ordinary human power, achievement, experience, etc.: "She made a superhuman effort to complete the novel."
superhumanity
1. Above or beyond what is human; having a higher nature or greater powers than humans have.
2. Exceeding ordinary human power, achievement, experience, etc.: "My parents made a superhuman effort to make sure I got a proper education."
superhumanly
1. Characterized by being above or beyond normal human performances; preternatural or supernatural.
2. Beyond ordinary or normal human ability, power, or experience.
superimpose
1. To lay or place (something) on or over something else.
2. To add as a distinct feature, element, or quality: "She superimposed her own interpretation when she retold the story."
3. To put or join as an addition (usually followed by on or upon).
4. In motion Pictures and television; to print (an image) over another image so that both are seen at once: "The credits were superimposed over the opening scene."
superimposition
1. The placing of one image on top of another, especially placing a photograph over some other graphic.
2. To lay or place (something) on or over something else.
3. To add as a distinct feature, element, or quality: "The teacher superimposed her own interpretation when she retold the story to the class."
4. The principle in library cataloging when new rules are introduced, whereby only entries made after the rules take effect need to conform to the changes, making it unnecessary to recatalog materials processed under the old rules.

New entries are interfiled with the old. The principle was adopted in 1967 by libraries throughout the United States, following Library of Congress practice, when Anglo-American Cataloging Rules were adopted as the national catalog code.

1. To bring in, or upon, as an addition to something.
2. To bring in or to induce as an added feature, circumstance, etc.; to superimpose.
superinducement
The introduction of something: such as, an addition over or above something already existing.
superinsulated, super-insulated; superinsulation
A description of a building that has massive amounts of insulation, airtight construction, controlled ventilation, and other features that maximize the efficiency of its inherent climate control.
superintend
To act as superintendent of; direct; supervise; manage [to stretch out; to direct; to pay attention to].
superintendence
1. The management by overseeing the performance or operation of a person or group.
2. The act of supervising or managing a situation or people.
superintendency
1. A district or place under a superintendent.
2. The position or work of a superintendent.
superintendent
