(Greek: bunch of grapes, uvula [that which resembles a grape hanging from a stock]; staphylococci, grape-shaped bacteria occurring in irregular clusters)


staphylococcus (s), staphylocci (pl)
A term applied loosely to any pathogenic micrococci (form of very small globular or oval cells).
staphyloderma
Cutaneous infection with staphylococci.
staphylodermatitis
A dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin, caused by staphylococci.
staphylodialysis
Relaxation or elongation of the uvula.
staphyloma
A protrusion of the cornea or sclera of the eye.
staphylomatous
Concerning or similar to a staphyloma.
staphyloncus
A tumor or swelling of the uvula (anatomical terminology for a pendent, fleshy mass).
staphylopharyngorrhaphy
Any of several different operations on the soft palate and uvula.
staphyloplasty
Plastic surgery of the uvula or soft palate.
staphyloptosia, staphyloptosis
Relaxation or elongation of the uvula.
staphylorrhaphy
Suture of a cleft palate.
staphyloschisis
A cleft palate.
staphylotoxin
A toxin caused by one of the staphylococci; especially, Staphylococcus aureus.

Among some of the toxins produced are an enterotoxin, a cause of food poisoning, and exotoxins, including a hemotoxin that lyses (destruction of) red blood cells, a dermonecrotic toxin, toxic shock syndrome toxin, and leukocidins.
