quietus
1. A final stroke which settles something.
2. To discharge from life or entering death; that is, to die.
3. A release from a duty or debt.

A shortened version of Middle English quietus est, "He is quit", a form of discharge from a debt or other obligation; from Medieval Latin quietus est, from Latin, quietus, past participle of quiescere, "to rest"; from quies, quiet, rest".

This R.I.P. symbol is used on tombstones, cards of mourning, etc. The plural form is Requiescant in pace, "May they rest in peace." The abbreviation, R.I.P. is used for both the singular and the plural applications.
