One lining the outside of the lungs and the other the inside of the chest cavity; fluid between the two layers provides lubrication and so allows smooth, uniform expansion and contraction of the lungs during breathing; pertaining to the side.

The serous membrane investing the lungs and lining the thoracic cavity, completely enclosing a potential space known as the pleural cavity.
