periotic
1. Surrounding, or pertaining to the region surrounding, the internal ear; as, the periotic capsule.
2. A reference to certain bones or bony elements that form or help to form a protective capsule for the internal ear.
peripatetic
1. Traveling from place to place, especially working in several establishments and traveling between them.
2. A peripatetic worker, especially a teacher who travels between schools.
3. Walking or traveling around; itinerant.
4. A person who walks from place to place.
5. A follower of Aristotle or an adherent of Aristotelianism. Aristotle taught philosophy while walking in the Lyceum of ancient Athens.
peripetalous
Surrounding, or situated around, petals.
peripeteia, peripetia, peripety
A sudden and unexpected change of fortune or events or reversal of circumstances; especially, in a literary work.
peripheral
1. Related to, located in, or constituting an outer boundary or periphery.
2. Perceived or perceiving near the outer edges of the retina; such as, peripheral vision.
3. Of the surface or outer part of a body or organ; external.
4. Situated away from the center, as opposed to centrally located; for example, peripheral vision means the type of vision that allows one to see objects that are not in the center of one's visual field.
5. Relating to, or being part of the peripheral nervous system.
6. Of minor relevance or importance.
7. Auxiliary.
peripherally
In or at or near a periphery or according to a peripheral role or function or relationship; the opposite of "centrally".
periphery
1. The outside boundary or surface of something.
2. The outside or surface of a structure; the portion outside the central region.
3. The circumference of a circle or other geometric figure.
periphrasis (s), periphrases (pl)
1. The use of circumlocution.
2. The use of an unnecessarily long or roundabout form of expression; circumlocution.
3. A style that involves indirect ways of expressing things.
periphrastic, periphrastically
1. Relating to or using periphrasis.
2. Roundabout and unnecessarily wordy; circumlocutory.
periphyton
1. A community of tiny organisms; such as, protozoans, hydras, insect larvae, and snails, living on the surfaces of rooted aquatic plants.
2. Sessile organisms, such as algae and small crustaceans, that live attached to surfaces projecting from the bottom of a freshwater aquatic environment.
periplastic
The protoplasmic matter which surrounds the entoblast, or cell nucleus, and undergoes segmentation.
peripneumonia
An inflammation of the lungs, or of some part of the thorax, attended with acute fever and difficult respiration.
peripteral
A reference to a classical temple or other structure which has a single row of columns on all sides.
peripterous
Feathered all around or surrounded by feathers.
perirhinal
Around the nose or nasal cavity.
