(Greek: few, small; abnormally few or small; used as a prefix)


oligomenorrhea
1. A reduction in the frequency of menstruation, with cycle lengths usually exceeding 40 days.
2. Scanty, or markedly diminished, menstrual flow during menstruation.

Also called relative amenorrhea or infrequent menstruation.

oligomerous
Having one or more whorls with fewer members than other whorls of the flower.
oligomictic
1. A lake that circulates only at rare, irregular intervals during abnormal cold spells.
2. A reference to a clastic (fragments of other rocks) sedimentary rock, composed of a single rock type.
oligomorphic
Presenting few changes of form; not polymorphic.
oligonatality
A relative scarcity of births.
oligonephronia
A congenital anomaly of the renal parenchyma (functional tissue of the kidney, consisting of the nephrons) in which there are fewer than the usual number of nephrons (anatomical and functional unit of the kidney).
oligonitrophile
A creature that thrives in habitats having a low nitrogen content.
oligonitrophily, oligonitrophilous
Thriving in habitats having a low nitrogen content.
oligonucleotides
A compound made up of the condensation of a small number of nucleotides.
oligo-ovulation
A reduction in the number of oocytes maturing or in the frequency of ovulation.
oligopela
A lake bottom deposit which contains very little clay.
oligopelic
1. A reference to an area, substrate, or habitat containing small amounts of clay.
2. Property of a lake bottom deposit which contains very little clay.
oligopepsia
A state of insufficient digestion.
oligophage, oligophagy
1. Utilizing only a small variety of food species.
2. Eating only certain foods or a very limited range of preferred food items.
oligophagous
1. A reference to eating limited, or certain kinds, of foods.
2. Having a limited choice of food preferences; such as, a parasite with few acceptable hosts.
