acetal
1. A colorless, flammable, volatile liquid used as a solvent.
2. Any of the compounds formed from aldehydes combined with alcohol.
3. Any organic compound formed by adding alcohol molecules to aldehyde molecules; etymology: acet(o)– + al(cohol).
acetate
1. A salt or ester of acetic acid.
2. Cellulose acetate or any of various products, especially fibers, derived from it.
acetic
1. Having the nature of vinegar.
2. Pertaining to, derived from, or producing vinegar or acetic acid.
acetic (uh SEE tik)
1. Sour, tart, tangy, acerbic: "These pickles are too ascetic; that is, too sour!"
2. A reference to vinegar or other acid characteristics: "The acetic flavor of vinegar is used in salad dressings to give them a little punch."
acetify, acetification, acetifier
1. To convert or to become converted to acetic acid or vinegar.
2. To make sour or more sour; acidify, acidulate.
3. To turn acidic.
acetimeter, acetometer
An instrument for estimating the amount of acetic acid in vinegar or in any liquid containing acetic acid.
acetimetry
The act or method of ascertaining the strength of vinegar, or the proportion of acetic acid contained in it.
acetolysis
Decomposition of an organic compound with the addition of the elements of acetic acid at the point of decomposition; analogous to hydrolysis and phosphorolysis.
acetone
1. A colorless, volatile, extremely flammable liquid ketone widely used as an organic solvent.
2. An organic compound produced in excessive amounts in diabetic acidosis.
acetonemia
Excessive acetone or ketone bodies in the blood; (ketone bodies: substances that are produced by fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism in the liver).
acetonuria
Excretion in the urine of large amounts of acetone, an indication of incomplete oxidation of large amounts of lipids; commonly occurs in diabetic acidosis.
acetose, acetous
1. Sour like vinegar.
2. Tasting like vinegar
acetum
Vinegar.
acetum Italum
Italic vinegar.

The harsh, biting wit of the Romans; Roman sarcasm.

acetylase
Any enzyme catalyzing acetylation or deacetylation.
