amphimictic
1. In nematodes, reproduction in which sperm and eggs come from separate individuals (cross-fertilization).
2. Nematodes that are capable of interbreeding freely and of producing fertile offspring.
amphimixis, amphimict
1. A term used to indicate the fact that both parents contribute to the inheritance of their offspring.
2. True sexual reproduction; the union of male and female gametes; may be either autogamy (inbreeding) or allogamy (outbreeding).
amphioecious
A reference to a population or species showing broad variable tolerance of habitat and environmental contitions.
amphioxus
Sharp at both ends.
amphipathic
A reference to a molecule, having two different affinities, as a polar end that is attracted to water and a nonpolar end that is repelled by it.
amphiphile
Any of many organic compounds, as a surfactant, detergent, bile salt, or phospholipid, composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic portions.
amphiphilic
Of or relating to a molecule having a polar, water-soluble group attached to a nonpolar, water-insoluble hydrocarbon chain.
amphiphobic
Denoting a molecule consisting of detergents or wetting agents, that contains groups with characteristically different properties; for example, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties.
amphiphyte
A plant able to live either rooted in damp soil above the water level or completely submerged.
amphipneust
An animal that breathes both by lungs and by gills; a name given by some to the lowest order of the Amphibious animals, including the Proteus and Siren, which retain their gills all their lives.
amphipneustic
Having breathing-pores at both ends of the body, as certain dipterous larvae.
amphipod
1. Any of numerous small, flat-bodied crustaceans of the group Amphipoda, including the beach fleas, sand hoppers, etc.
2. A small crustacean of the order Amphipoda; such as, the beach flea, having a laterally compressed body with no carapace.
Amphipoda
An order or sub-order of the sessile-eyed Crustacea, having feet of two kinds (in which they differ from the Isopoda), of which the common sand-hopper is an example.
amphipodan
Referring to Amphipoda.
amphipodous
Of or pertaining to the Amphipoda; having feet of two kinds.
