-aceous, -acea, -aceae, -aceaen, -aceus

(Latin: a suffix; having the quality of, of the nature of, characterized by, belonging to, resembling)

There are hunderds of words that utilize the -aceous suffix which are not shown here; however, the following will present important examples.

A suffix that forms adjectives and is used with technical combinations, especially in biological terms: "pertaining or belonging to, of the nature of, or characterized by; to be full of, to possess abundantly". The suffix -acea usually denotes "orders and classes in zoology" while the suffix -aceae usually denotes "orders and families in botany" and -aceaen is used to denote members of "orders of the animal kingdom".


lardaceous, lardeous, lardiform
1. Resembling lard; waxy, fatty.
2. Containing lardacein.
lutaceous
1. Pertaining to, made of, or formed from mud.
2. Formed from or having the fine texture of mud.
3. Related to, or having, the fine-grained texture of a sedimentary rock formed from mud.
margaritaceous
mucoraceous
Related to, or encompassed by, the the fungal family, Mucoraceae (a family of gungi, some of which are causal agents of mucormycosis, a serious fungus infection occurring most commonly in the lining of the nose and surrounding sinuses; and otomycosis, inflammation of the external ear, usually caused by a bacteria or fungus).
musaceous
oleaceous
orchidacean
One who devotes himself/herself to the cultivation of orchids (flowers); an orchid (flower) fancier.
orchidaceous
Resembling an orchid (flower) in some way, especially in being showy.
ostraceous
papilionaceous
1. Of or pertaining to a butterfly.
2. Belonging to the Papilionaceae family whose plants have petals in the form of a butterfly, mostly legumes, such as peas and beans.
papyraceous
Of the consistence or thinness of paper; of the nature of paper; made of or resembling paper; papery.
philorchidaceous
pilosebaceous
1. A reference to the unit consisting of a hair follicle and a sebaceous gland.
2. Relating to the hair follicles and sebaceous glands.
plumacious
A feather-like structure.
poaceous
In botany, having the nature of meadow grass; belonging to meadow grass.
