hystero-, hyster-, hysteri- +
(Greek: the womb or uterus; hysteria)
"Hysteric disturbances", that most frequently occur in women were ascribed erroneously by ancient Greeks to the influence of the womb and were, for this reason, called hysteria, "disease of the womb".
This hestero- unit is not related to a similarly spelled hysteres- unit of words referring to "shortcoming, deficiency; to be behind, to come late, to lag; later".
hysteromyotomy
Incision into the uterus for the removal of a solid tumor.
hystero-oophorectomy
The surgical removal of the uterus and the ovaries.
hysteropathy
Any disease, or disorder, of the uterus.
hysteropexy
Placement of the uterus with a surgical operation to correct any displacement.
hysteroplasty
Plastic surgery of the uterus.
Plastic surgery is the surgical specialty, or procedure, concerned with the restoration, construction, reconstruction, or improvement in the shape and appearance of body structures that are missing, defective, damaged, or misshapen.
hysteropsychosis
Hysterical psychosis which is marked by excessive or uncontrollable emotion and a mental disorder characterized by symptoms; such as, delusions or hallucinations, that indicate impaired contact with reality.
hysterorrhaphy
The sutural repair (material used in closing a wound with stitches) of a lacerated (torn) uterus.
hysterorrhexis
1. Rupture, the tearing, or disruption, of the tissue of the uterus.
2. The rupture of the uterus; especially, when pregnant.
hysterosalpingectomy
The surgical removal of the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
hysteroscope
An endoscope used in direct visual examination of the canal of the uterine cervix and the cavity of the uterus.
hysteroscopy
1. A visual examination of the uterus and uterine lining using an endoscope inserted through the vagina.
2. Use of a fiber-optic endoscope to study the womb lining, take biopsy samples, and carry out local treatment.
hysterospasm
A uterine spasm or a painful and involuntary muscular contraction.
hysterothermometry
Measurement of uterine temperature.
hysterotomy
A surgical operation in which the uterus is opened to remove a fetus before 28 weeks' gestation.
After 28 weeks, it would be called a caesarean section. It is now seldom used as a method of abortion.
hysterotrachelectomy
Removal of the neck of the uterus.
