(Greek: above, over; excessive; more than normal; abnormal excess [in medicine]; abnormally great or powerful sensation [in physical or pathological terms]; highest [in chemical compounds])


hypernym, hypernymy
1. The semantic relation of belonging to a higher rank or class; for example, superordination.
2. A superordinate word or a word that is more generic than a given word.

A superordinate word is said to be an umbrella term: a word whose meaning encompasses the meaning of another more specific word; for example, "animal" is a superordinate of "dog"; in the relationship between "chair and furniture", "furniture" is a hypernym; in the relationship between "horse and animal", "animal" is a hypernym.

Also, someone or something that is superior: someone or something of superior rank, status, or class.

hyperonychia, hyperonychosis
The excessive enlargement, overgrowth, or thickness of the finger and/or toe nails.
hyperope
A person with hyperopia (a far-sighted person).
hyperopia
Farsightedness; the ability to see distant objects more clearly than close objects.
hyperorality
The excessive placing of inedible objects into the mouth.

This is a normal behavior in babies but in older people it may signify mental illness or dementia.

hyperorchidism
1. Excessive internal secretion of the testicles.
2. Said to be an obsolete term for increased size or increased functioning of the testes.
hyperorexia
An excessive appetite or an eating disorder which is characterized by self-induced vomiting after eating.
hyperosmia
An abnormally acute sense of smell or a heightened olfactory perception.
hyperosmolality
The abnormal increase in the osmolality (unit of measurement) of a solution, especially a body fluid.
hyperosmolar
A reference to solutions or having an osmotic pressure greater than that of normal plasma.
hyperosmolarity
1. The abnormal increase in the osmolarity of a solution, especially a body fluid, which occurs in dehydration.
2. In biochemistry, an osmolar concentration of the body fluids that is abnormally increased.
3. A state of high molecular density within a solution such that it will absorb water across a semipermeable membrane from a less dense solution.
hyperosmosis
1. Producing or caused by abnormally rapid osmosis (the diffusion of a solvent through a semipermeable membrane from a dilute to a more concentrated solution).
2. Containing a higher concentration of osmotically active components than a standard solution.
hyperosmotic
1. Relating to or characterized by increased osmosis.
2. Of a liquid, having a higher osmotic pressure than the normal physiological level.
hyperosteogeny
Excessive, or abnormal, bone development.
hyperostosis
A hypertrophy (abnormal enlargement) of bone, either in the form of a local increase in size; such as, an exostosis (non cancerous growth on the surface of a bone), or a generalized increase that involves a whole bone.
