(Greek: above, over; excessive; more than normal; abnormal excess [in medicine]; abnormally great or powerful sensation [in physical or pathological terms]; highest [in chemical compounds])


hyperlogia
Morbid verbosity, excessive talking, or loquacity.
hypermania
1. A severe mania in which there is a partial or complete disorientation, and often accompanied by violent behavior.
2. Intense mania with overwhelming tensions and marked disorientation.
hypermarket
1. A huge supermarket; usually built on the outskirts of a town or city.
2. A very large self-service store that sells products usually sold in department stores; as well as, those sold in supermarkets; for example, clothes, hardware, electrical goods, and food.
3. Etymology: from a translation of the French hypermarché.
hypermastia
1. An excessive, or abnormal, enlargement of the breasts.
2. Excessively large mammary glands.
hypermenorrhea
1. Excessively prolonged or profuse menses.

Synonyms: menorrhagia, menostaxis.

2. Menstruation with an excessive flow but at regular intervals and of usual duration.
3. Frequent menstrual periods or an abnormal increase in the duration and/or amount of menstrual flow.
hypermetamorphosis
1. A kind of metamorphosis, in certain insects, in which the larva itself undergoes remarkable changes of form and structure during its growth.
2. A major change in form between successive stages of larval development; especially, of insects, for example, when an active mobile larva turns into a legless inactive grub.
3. In medicine, an excessive attentiveness and reaction to visual stimuli.
hypermetria
Lacking normal motor co-ordination such that movements over reach their targets, as seen in cerebellar dysfunction.

Such actions can be seen in spontaneous movements but they are often more obvious in actions rapidly executed on command; such as, in the finger-nose test or the heel-knee test.

hypermetropia
An abnormal condition of the eye in which vision is better for distant objects than for near objects.

It results from the eyeballs being too short from front to back, causing images to be focused behind the retinas. Also known as "farsightedness".

hypermile, hypermiling, hypermileage; highpermiler
An attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one’s car and one’s driving techniques; including, keeping the tires properly inflated to maximize gas mileage; removing the roof rack to streamline the car and reduce drag; turning the engine off rather than letting it idle at long stoplights.

Rather than aiming for good mileage or even great mileage, hypermilers seek to push their gas tanks to the limit and achieve hypermileage, exceeding EPA ratings for miles per gallon.

The term hypermiling (high" pur MIGHL ing) is "The Oxford University Press Word of the Year" for 2008.

hypermnesia (high" puhrm NEE zhuh, high" puhrm NEE zhi uh)
1. Exceptionally exact or vivid memory, especially as associated with certain mental illnesses.
2. An abnormally vivid or complete memory or the reawakening of impressions apparently long forgotten (as in a moment of extreme danger when drowning, etc.).
3. A capacity under hypnosis for immediate registration and precise recall of many more individual things than is thought possible under ordinary circumstances.
4. Extreme retentiveness or unusual clarity of memory.
hypermnestic
A reference to or characterized by hypermnesia or the ability to recall things to a greater than normal degree.
hypermyesthesia
Muscular hyperesthesia or an increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli of the muscles; such as pain or touch.
hypermyotrophy
Muscular hypertrophy or a condition of excessive muscular development.
hypernasality
The nasal quality heard in speech when an abnormal proportion of the airflow passes through the nasal cavity; as may happen in a cleft palate (roof of the mouth), following palatal paralysis, or as a result of surgery.

The palate is the roof of the mouth with the front portion being bony ("hard palate") and the back portion is muscular ("soft palate").

hypernephelist
Someone who goes above and beyond the clouds.
