(Greek: membrane, skin; virginal membrane; hymen originally denoted any membrane)

Hymen was the god of marriage in Greek mythology and it was a refrain of the song sung at the marriages of the ancient Greeks. In its present specific meaning, it was first used by Vesalius in 1550.
